A Ford dealer contacted Westminster Speed and Sound about doing several Ford Raptor upgrades on a 2014 model purchased by one of their clients. As we listened, we realized the truck was going to get lots of work done, so we suggesting doing a consultation at our store. The dealer agreed, so we contacted the client directly and set up a time for him to come by our shop with his truck. When he arrived, we went out to the vehicle and listened as he explained his goals for the upgrades. During the conversation, we offered our ideas as well and, after further discussions, we developed a gameplan. We submitted a proposal to the client that he liked, so we set a time to begin work on the Raptor.
UV Protection And Heat Rejection
Let’s start with the upgrades for the inside of the truck and the ancillary equipment that went along with them. We began by installing our Dark Matter film at a 50% darkness level on the side and rear windows, as well as our Dark Matter clear film on the windshield. Adding this film gave the client 360 degrees of protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays, as well as more than 50% reduction in heat entering the vehicle. The client chose the light shade on the windows since he didn’t want the “look” of a tinted vehicle, but still wanted the performance benefits.
Front Camera And Grille Upgrades
Next, we added an interface that allowed the front view camera to be used at any speed and with the transfer case in any position. During the installation, we figured out that one of our aftermarket cameras was going to work better than the Ford unit, so we made a custom mount to hold it on the grille. We reengineered one of the upfitter switches to act as the trigger for the front camera. The interface also allows the driver to enter a navigation destination while driving, which is a big plus when you have a passenger in the vehicle. We installed a Compustar Drone GPS tracking system in the vehicle to easily allow the client to keep an eye on it, using his smartphone. If there is an unauthorized use of the vehicle, he gets a notification right on his home screen.
We installed a black T-Rex grille in the front of the truck and integrated the front view camera into the grille at the proper viewing angle.
Beefy Bumpers By Hammerhead
While the Ford Raptor is already a mean-looking truck, we knew changing the bumpers would really set it off. We installed Hammerhead Armor bumpers front and rear, and the client chose the pre-runner style up front. In the rear, we integrated the factory parking sensors into the bumper so they would continue to work. We also added LED reverse lights to dramatically increase visibility at night when backing up.
Lighting Up The Night With Rigid
Once the front bumper was installed, we flushed two sets of Rigid D2 series LED fog lights into the outside area of the bumper. Our team built custom circuits so the factory fog light switch could power the new lights. At the center top of the bumper, we installed a 20” Rigid E-Series LED combo bar, with another upfitter switch to control it. We re-engineered the switch so the light would illuminate whenever the high beams were on and the switch was activated.
Giving The Raptor Some Growl
Since a Raptor has such an incredible engine, we were sad when it pulled into the parking lot, because you couldn’t hear it. For this reason, as well as some more power, we added a few goodies – an Airaid cold air intake system under the hood, and a Magnaflow black powder coated exhaust as well. The combination of these two items gave the truck some sorely needed growl.
Color-Matched Body Parts
During initial conversation with the client, he had some good ideas for paint themes and colors for the exterior of the truck. We decided that the fender flares would look better if painted to match the blue exterior color, so we removed them, painted them and reinstalled them. The hood also had a set of gills in it that we removed and painted satin-black to match the bumpers.
Looking Good With Illuminated Logos
We installed illuminated SVT and Raptor logos on the fenders and tailgate to replace the factory ones, wiring them to illuminate with the parking light circuit on the truck.
Icing On The Lighting Cake
For the final piece of the puzzle, we installed a Rigid E Series 50” overhead light bar on the vehicle that is controlled by one of his upfitter switches that we reconfigured to operate the way he wanted.
Client Loved His Ford Raptor Upgrades
When the client came to pick up his Ford Raptor, he was blown away by the transformation. As we walked him around the vehicle and pointed out the different items, he just kept nodding in approval. That made our day.
