A repeat client from Littlestown, Pennsylvania, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound looking for a significant 2014 Toyota Tundra audio upgrade. We knew this client very well and have done multiple vehicles for him, so there was already a high trust factor. When he brought the truck by the store, we went outside and looked it over carefully. We spent significant time on listening to the stock stereo system, and hearing the client’s goals for his Tundra.
We took all of that information and started building a road map for the upgrades. Early on in the conversation, we decided together that the upgrades would probably be done in three stages and that the first stage would be upgrading the stock radio in the dash. He had a few specific requests:
- Keep the stock rearview camera working, and move the display from his rearview mirror to his new navigation system.
- Retain the steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
- Give him two USB ports and an aux input flushed into the center console.
Top-Of-The-Line Pioneer Radio Offers Numerous Benefits in This Tundra Audio System
Since this client likes premium products, we decided to use the Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX model. This particular navigation system is probably the best one currently on the market when it comes to flexibility, expandability and feature set. He will now have HD Radio, which is sounds markedly better than analog AM and FM, plus Bluetooth for both hands-free use and music streaming. Pioneer uses a capacitive touchscreen on this model, just like a modern smartphone, so it is very responsive to your fingers.
Pioneer includes both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, which are interfaces that allow for a simple, voice-controlled interface for your iPhone or Android phone. Now the client can use his phone to make calls safely while driving up the road, as well as send and receive text messages and control his music library.
OEM Backup Camera Output Custom Integrated To Pioneer Radio
It is important to note that the stock Toyota backup camera does not simply unplug from the rearview mirror and plug into the Pioneer unit. Our installation department made a custom circuit to power the backup camera and grab the video signal, and then fed it safely into his new navigation system. Now his display goes from a small 3.5” screen in his mirror to a big, bold 7” display in his dash. It was quite an improvement.
Multitask Steering Wheel Controls Put Radio Control At Client’s Fingertips
WSS Westminster Speed & Sound not only retained his original steering wheel-mounted audio controls, but was able to give them multitask capabilities. If you tap the buttons, they do one thing; if you hold them down, they do another. We customized every function to the client’s preferences.
SiriusXM Added As Additional Source
We also added SiriusXM Radio to the system because the client is a big fan of satellite radio.
Client Excited For Current And Future Upgrades
When the client came to pick up the vehicle, he loved the clean, factory look of the installation. He appreciated all of the new functionality and is looking forward to adding bass, amplifiers and better-sounding speakers in the future.
