A client from Upperco dropped into Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about upgrading his 2000 Porsche Boxster stereo system. The client wanted to improve the sound quality and volume capabilities of the audio system and add modern smartphone connectivity features. After talking to the client to form an understanding of his expectations for the system, we inspected the vehicle to confirm that our proposal would work.
Porsche Boxster Stereo Upgrade
We started the project by removing the Porsche CDR-200 CD receiver and the factory amplifier from under the hood of the car. We used a two-piece matte black dash kit to relocate the HVAC controls to a lower position in the center console. We wired an adapter harness to the power harness of a Sony XAV-AX100 multimedia receiver. The new receiver includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration technologies that will let the client make phone calls and dictate text message without taking his hands off the steering wheel.
Our technicians added a pair of USB ports to one of the blank knock-outs in the trim panel around the radio. One port serves as the connection point for the client’s smartphone while the other can be used to charge USB devices.
JL Audio Speaker and Amplifier Upgrade
The next step was to remove the factory speakers from the doors and dash of the Boxster and install a set of JL Audio C3-650 6.5-inch component speakers in their place. A JL Audio XD200.2 amplifier powers the new speakers. We were able to mount the amplifier in the front cargo area of the Porsche using the factory amplifier’s mounting bracket. As you can see, all the wiring to and from the amp is neatly concealed using automotive-grade cloth tape for a factory-installed look.
With the wiring complete and the equipment connected, we finished the installation by configuring the amplifier to work with the new Sony radio. This process is crucial to the overall performance of the new sound system.
