Ladies, I have some exciting news for you! Apple and Google have each created a product that will make your car rides safer, more enjoyable and more productive. These products allow you to continue using many of the functions and apps on your iPhone and Android phone hands-free while you are driving. Having my smartphone in my car has been a great new and helpful experience.
The Two Types: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Apple’s product is called CarPlay, and it is compatible with any iPhone 5 and newer (iOs 7.1 and newer). Google’s product is called Android Auto and is compatible with any Android phone running 5.0 and newer.
What It’s Like Using My Smartphone In My Car
Imagine this: You hop in your vehicle and plug your phone into the USB port that is now installed in your car. You’re driving down the road, heading to meet a friend for lunch, and remember that you need to call your mom later. Having many things on your mind, you don’t want to forget anything. You can set a reminder while you’re driving just by saying, “Remind me to call Mom when I get home.” Now, when you arrive back at your house later in the day, your phone will remind you to make that phone call to your mom.
Then you realize that you still have to let your husband know that dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. Instead of picking up your phone and typing a text while you drive, causing you to take your eyes off the road, you just say, “Send a text to John: Dinner is at 7 p.m. tonight.” Just like that, you can check another little thing off your to-do list, and you have one less thing to remember to do later.
You’re almost at your lunch meeting, but you think you may have made a wrong turn. Not sure where you are, you decide to get directions. You say your in-vehicle system, “Give me directions to J Café.” Now you have turn-by-turn directions being read to you, the map is displayed on your new in-dash touchscreen and you arrive at your destination on time!
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow you to set reminders and have upcoming events read to you. You also can send texts and have incoming messages read to you, receive turn-by-turn directions through GPS, make phone calls, have use of Siri and iTunes with CarPlay and Google Now with Android Auto, and even have the weather reported to you. Lots of other apps are also compatible with this technology. Some of them include Pandora, Spotify, Stitcher and iHeart Radio.
All of this is done through voice command and Bluetooth, so your eyes never leave the road and your hands stay on the wheel, right where they need to be. You’ll also be surprised how easy it is to use this technology. One of my favorite things about it is being able to multitask. I’m now able to continue with my day and the tasks that I need to be completed while I’m driving in my car, and it’s all done safely.
How To Get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
You can easily have use of this technology in your vehicle by purchasing a new in-dash touchscreen unit to be installed your car.
After experiencing how these products have changed the time I spend in my car, I don’t ever want to go back to a car ride without them. I believe you won’t be disappointed!
