A longtime local client recently returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to have the premium audio system in his 2021 Jeep Wrangler upgraded. This client has a well-established reputation here at the shop for buying vehicles with top-of-the-line factory-installed audio systems, then having us improve them to meet his expectations. This cool little two-door Rubicon was no exception to that tradition. The upgrade we designed maintains the factory-installed appearance of the audio system while delivering studio-quality sound.
BLAM Speaker Upgrades
We started the project by removing the tiny speaker enclosures from the dash to make way for a set of new pods from Metra and a set of BLAM Signature S 165.100 components. The stock speakers are about 4 inches in diameter, while the new drivers from BLAM are 6.5 inches in size. This extra area improves their efficiency and power handling. We removed the little midrange drivers from the top of the dash to make way for the TS 28 1.1-inch soft-dome tweeters. These tweeters can be crossed over lower than most conventional 1-inch drivers to help raise the soundstage so that the music sounds as though it’s coming from the windshield rather than the dash.
Jeep Premium Audio System Amplifier Replacement
The next step was to add an amplifier with an integrated digital signal processor to the system. The client chose the Match UP 7DSP to power the system. We used a PAC AmpPro4 interface to extract a full-bandwidth audio signal from the factory radio. We upgraded the interface with the optional optical Toslink connector to feed a signal to the amplifier.
Once we had a stereo audio signal in the amp, we used the signal processor to divide the audio frequencies between the tweeters and woofers in the dash and the stock subwoofer in the Jeep’s cargo area.
The factory-installed subwoofer is a unique quad 2-ohm voice coil design. We rewired it to present two 4-ohm loads to the 160-watt channels of the Match amplifier. With 320 watts of clean power available and proper calibration using the amp’s equalizer, the subwoofer sounded much better than it did from the factory.
Baltimore’s Jeep Stereo Upgrades
After a long day’s work, we had the audio system in this Wrangler sounding amazing. The client returned to listen to the new system and agreed that it put the stock Premium Audio in the Jeep to shame.
