One of our technicians who lives in Taneytown wanted to install a stereo system in the 2020 Polaris RZR 1000 side-by-side he’d recently purchased. We figured that this would be a great opportunity to show off the powersports audio system upgrades we have available. We decided that the Rockford Fosgate RZR14-Stage5 kit would be the perfect solution, so we sent the tech home with the gear and told him to get to work and take lots of photos!
Rockford Fosgate Powersports Audio Upgrade Kits
Rockford sells its powersports audio kits in stages that offer increasing features and performance levels. Stage 1 includes their PMX-2 marine-grade digital media receiver. Additional components like front speakers, an amplifier, rear speakers and a subwoofer are added or upgraded as you progress through the option packages.
All of the RZR 1000 kits include the PMX-2 Punch Marine compact digital media radio and the RFRZ14-PMXDK mounting kit that is specific to 2014 and newer Gen-2 vehicles. The radio includes an AM/FM tuner with weatherband capabilities, Bluetooth audio streaming and digital media file playback from a USB memory stick. The kit mounts the radio at the top of the dash, so it’s easy to see and access.
Front and Rear RZR Speakers
The Stage 2 kit adds a set of the RFRZ14-FSE front speaker pods to the radio. The pods are made from durable ABS plastic that is rotomolded in a custom tool to fit the kick-panel areas of the vehicle perfectly. Since we chose a Stage 5 kit, the system includes a set of Punch Series PM2652B speakers instead of the Prime Series drivers from the Stage 2 package. These speakers can handle more power and play louder.
The Stage 4 package is where the RM1652W-MB Moto-Can rear speaker enclosures are added. Because we chose a Stage 5 kit, the Prime speakers are once again upgraded to Punch Series drivers, and the package is called the PM2652W-MB. The enclosures mount to the rear roll bar using die-cast PM-CL2B brackets. Notice the attention to detail of the brackets that includes braided wire safety lanyards. That’s pretty cool. Wiring for the rear speakers is included in a package called the RFRZ14-RSW16.
Side-by-Side Subwoofer System
Stage 3 adds a subwoofer enclosure to the system. The RFRZ14-FWE is manufactured in the same way as the front speaker pod, but with thicker walls and more bracing. The Stage 3 package includes a Prime Series marine subwoofer, but Stage 5 upgrades the bass system with a Power-Series T1S2-10 10-inch shallow-mount driver. This sub is rated to handle 500 watts of power and has a cone excursion specification of 15 mm in each direction. That’s pretty cool for a shallow sub.
The subwoofer enclosure mounts on the passenger side of the vehicle in place of the glove box in the dash. Rockford chose a vented design for the enclosure that dramatically increases low-frequency output and overall subwoofer system efficiency.
Stages 3 and 4 come with a four-channel amp, but the Stage 5 sound system is powered by a five-channel Power Series TM1000X5ad marine-grade amplifier. This amp can deliver up to 100 watts of power to each of the front and rear speakers and an impressive 600 watts to the system subwoofer. Rockford includes four-AWG wiring for the amp in a package called the RFRZ14-K4. The wiring kit also includes a steel mounting plate that locates the amp right at the top of the dash. No drilling is required to mount the amp since it uses factory fastener locations.
As you can see from the photos, all the wiring for the amp, radio, speakers and subwoofer is protected with a durable mesh braid. Our technician ensured that all the wiring was routed safely and secured to the frame so it wouldn’t rattle or buzz as he was bombing down the trails.
Baltimore’s Powersports Audio Upgrade Experts
After just over half of a day’s work, our technician had his Polaris RZR 1000 upgraded with the Rockford Stage 5 kit and he’d dialed the system in to deliver great sound and amazing output. Of course, once everything was done, he took the RZR for a rip and got it all dusty and dirty. We’ve all heard the audio system in this RZR, and we think it’s truly impressive.
