A client from up in York recently contacted the audio upgrade team at Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about updating the stereo in his 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4. The 30-year-old speakers in the doors had failed, and the radio lacked the connectivity he wanted. The client made it clear that he didn’t want to modify the vehicle in any way and preferred to keep things looking as original as possible. Thankfully, we’ve upgraded a lot of Porsches and we had a plan that’d give him the looks and performance he wanted.
Porsche Speaker and Amplifier Upgrade
We started this upgrade by removing the original radio from the dash to make way for a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 Bluetooth receiver. The new radio is period-correct for the classic Porsche, right down to how it mounts in the dash. The upgrade gives the owner the ability to stream audio over Bluetooth from his smartphone or play digital media files from a USB memory stick.
We connected the new radio to a Helix M 5DSP Mk2 amplifier that is mounted under the passenger seat. All the wiring for the amp is routed along the same pathways as the factory harnesses in the vehicle and is protected with automotive-grade cloth tape to prevent buzzes and rattles.
Upgraded Carrera 4 Speakers
Next, we removed the grilles from the woofer and midrange drivers in the doors to accommodate a set of BLAM Relax-series 130 RS component speakers. We mounted the new drivers in the original locations so that the stock grilles would still fit over the speakers for an OE look.
We used the digital signal processor built into the amplifier to divide audio frequencies between the tweeter and midrange drivers. Our technicians used a real-time audio analyzer to calibrate the frequency response from each speaker, and we configured the signal delay settings to create a very realistic soundstage that spans the width of the vehicle.

With the new equipment installed and the system calibration process complete, the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up his Porsche. He had a listen to the system and was thrilled with the way it sounds. He loved that we were able to maintain the classic look of the car while providing modern features and audio system performance.
